Ammonium Sulfate for Compound Fertilizer Production

For a granulation or blending plant, ammonium sulfate is a nitrogen and sulfur carrier whose value depends on physical form as much as price.

Compound fertilizer producers and bulk blenders are among the largest users of ammonium sulfate worldwide. They buy it for a specific reason: it is an economical way to introduce both nitrogen and sulfur into a formulation, and it behaves predictably as an input.

But the purchasing conversation in this segment is different from the agricultural distribution segment. Price per tonne of product matters less than cost per unit of nutrient delivered into a finished analysis — and the physical form can determine whether the finished product holds its composition at all.

Two different process routes

Understanding which route your customer operates clarifies what they need.

Chemical granulation

In a granulation plant, raw materials are combined and processed — often with steam, water or a binder — into granules of a target size and analysis. Ammonium sulfate may be fed into the process as a nitrogen and sulfur source, sometimes in solution form and sometimes as a solid feed.

The form requirement here is set by the plant’s feed system and process, not by a general rule. Some plants can take fine crystalline material; others need a specific granule size for their feed handling.

Physical blending

In a bulk blending operation, granular straight fertilizers are mixed to a target analysis without any chemical reaction. The product is a mechanical mixture, and its integrity depends entirely on the components staying mixed.

Here the form requirement is unambiguous: the particle size of every component has to be close to the others.

Why particle size decides blend quality

This is the single most important technical point in this segment, so it is worth being precise about.

In a bulk blend, the ammonium sulfate granules sit alongside urea, DAP, MOP or other granular components. When the mixture is handled — poured, conveyed, loaded into a truck, spread across a field — particles of different sizes and densities behave differently. Larger particles tend to roll to the outside of a falling stream; finer particles settle through the void spaces between coarser ones.

The result is segregation: a blend that leaves the plant with the correct analysis and arrives at the field with an uneven one. Nutrient strips in the field are the visible symptom. For the producer, the consequence is a formulation that does not reliably deliver the analysis on the label.

The standard defence is to match particle size distributions across all components within an agreed tolerance. This is why experienced blenders specify ammonium sulfate by particle size range, not simply as “granular”.

What to specify

A blender’s purchase specification should state, at minimum:

  • Form — granular, explicitly
  • Particle size distribution — the range and the acceptable tolerance, ideally expressed as a percentage passing and retained on specified sieves
  • Moisture — a limit, since moisture affects flow and caking
  • Free acid — relevant to handling and to compatibility with other components
  • Bulk density — affects volumetric feeding and storage calculations
  • Analysis — nominal 21-0-0-24S, with the declaration basis agreed
  • Packaging — jumbo bags discharging into the plant feed is common

Note that a particle size range is more useful than a single nominal size. Two materials described as “2–4 mm” can have very different distribution curves, and the distribution is what governs segregation behaviour.

Confirmed per order: particle size distribution, moisture, free acid and bulk density are producer- and lot-specific and are declared on the Technical Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis. The specification available for your programme is confirmed before you commit.

Cost per unit of nutrient, not per tonne

For a producer designing a formulation, the relevant comparison is not the delivered price of ammonium sulfate against the delivered price of an alternative. It is the cost of delivering a unit of nitrogen and a unit of sulfur into the finished product, taking into account:

  • The analysis of the input material
  • The physical form and whether it suits the process
  • The handling cost inside the plant
  • Whether the sulfur is required in the formulation anyway

Where the finished analysis requires sulfur, ammonium sulfate often displaces a separate sulfur source as well as part of the nitrogen, which changes the comparison materially. Where sulfur is not required, it is purely a nitrogen-source decision.

Seasonality and programme planning

Fertilizer production is seasonal, and a producer’s ammonium sulfate requirement is concentrated in the weeks before the application season in their market. Two practical points:

  • Volume profile matters to the supplier. A supplier allocating material for a season can plan around a stated monthly profile. A series of unannounced spot requirements cannot be served as well.
  • Confirm the specification before the peak. During peak season, flexibility narrows. Material that meets a particle size requirement is easier to secure when the requirement is known in advance.

  1. The process route (granulation or blending)
  2. The target analysis of your finished product
  3. The particle size range your process requires
  4. Your moisture and free acid limits
  5. Packaging and discharge configuration
  6. Your volume profile across the season

With those six items, a supplier can tell you whether the available production fits — and if it does not, what the closest fit is. That is a more productive conversation than a request for the best price on ammonium sulfate.

Why do compound fertilizer producers prefer granular ammonium sulfate?

Because blend stability depends on particle size matching. If the ammonium sulfate particles are much finer than the other components, the mixture segregates during handling and the analysis at the field no longer matches the analysis leaving the plant.

Can crystalline ammonium sulfate be used in NPK granulation?

It can be used as a chemical input in some granulation processes where the material is dissolved or re-granulated as part of the reaction. The form requirement depends on the process route, so specify it from your plant's requirement.
