Why producers use ammonium sulfate

Ammonium sulfate is a well-understood input in compound fertilizer manufacture. It introduces nitrogen into a formulation, brings sulfur in with it, and behaves predictably in both granulation and blending operations.

For a formulation that requires sulfur in the finished analysis, it often displaces a separate sulfur source as well as part of the nitrogen. That changes the economics of the purchase, which is why the useful comparison for a producer is not price per tonne of input but cost per unit of nutrient delivered into the finished product.

Two process routes, two form requirements

Granulation

In a granulation plant, raw materials are combined and processed into granules of a target size and analysis. Ammonium sulfate may be fed into the process as a nitrogen and sulfur source. The form requirement here is set by the plant's feed system — some plants can take fine material, others need a particular granule size for their handling equipment.

Take the specification from the plant requirement rather than from a general description.

Bulk blending

In bulk blending, granular straight fertilizers are physically mixed to a target analysis with no chemical reaction. The product is a mechanical mixture, and its integrity depends entirely on the components staying mixed. This is where ammonium sulfate's physical form becomes the deciding factor in the purchase.

Segregation — the problem particle size solves

When a blend is handled — poured, conveyed, loaded, spread — particles of different sizes and densities behave differently. Larger particles tend to roll to the outside of a falling stream; finer particles settle through the void spaces between coarser ones.

The result is a blend that leaves the plant with the correct analysis and arrives at the field with an uneven one. Nutrient strips are the visible symptom; a formulation that does not reliably deliver the analysis on the label is the commercial consequence.

The standard defence is to match particle size distributions across all components within an agreed tolerance. This is why experienced blenders specify ammonium sulfate by distribution against sieve sizes, not simply as "granular".

What to specify

  • Form — granular, stated explicitly for blending
  • Particle size distribution — sieve sizes, percentage passing and retained, and tolerance
  • Moisture — a maximum limit; moisture affects flow and caking
  • Free acid — relevant to handling and compatibility
  • Bulk density — affects volumetric feeding and storage calculations
  • Packaging and discharge configuration — jumbo bags discharging into plant feed is common
  • Volume profile — your monthly requirement across the season

A particle size range is more useful than a single nominal figure. Two materials described as "2–4 mm" can have very different distribution curves, and the distribution is what governs segregation.

Seasonality and programme planning

Fertilizer production is seasonal and a producer's requirement is concentrated in the weeks before the application season in their market. Two practical points:

  • A stated volume profile can be planned around. A series of unannounced spot requirements cannot be served as well, and will be priced accordingly.
  • Confirm the specification before the peak. During peak season the flexibility to match a specific particle size requirement narrows.

Why is particle size so important for compound fertilizer production?

In a bulk blend the product is a mechanical mixture. If the ammonium sulfate particles are much finer than the other components, the mixture segregates during handling and transport, so the analysis at the field no longer matches the analysis leaving the plant. Matching particle size distributions across components is the standard defence.

Can ammonium sulfate be used in NPK granulation?

Yes. It can be fed into a granulation process as a nitrogen and sulfur source. The form requirement depends on the plant feed system and the process route, so it should be specified from the plant requirement rather than from a general rule.
